Digital Advertising in 2026: How It Works, Costs and the Best Agencies

Independent ranking: Sortlist does not rank itself, and agencies cannot pay for their position in this ranking.

Everything you need to plan digital ads – and the agencies best placed to run them.

  • Best in Europe: Webernetic – 4.99 from 46 reviews, 14 published projects and an entry point of €600.
  • Best on a small budget: SER o no SER – projects from €100, 4.99 from 25 reviews and more than 2,000 clients in Spain since 2007.
  • Best for e-commerce: LUMINA – certified Shopify partner running the ads around the store, 5.0 from 26 reviews.

What is digital advertising?

Digital advertising is any paid message a brand places on a digital channel: a sponsored result on a search engine, a banner on a news site, a video before a YouTube clip, a post in a social feed, an ad in a podcast or a spot on a digital billboard. Unlike most traditional media, it can be targeted at precise audiences, changed while it runs and measured down to the click, the sale or the store visit.

Digital advertising is one part of digital marketing. Marketing also covers unpaid work – SEO, content, email to existing customers, community management – while advertising is the paid placement of messages. The two work best together: ads bring people in quickly, owned channels keep them.

What is digital advertising? (with examples)

  • Search: a plumber appears at the top of Google for “emergency plumber near me” and pays only when someone clicks.
  • Display: a travel brand shows banners on travel blogs to people who searched for flights last week.
  • Social: a fashion label runs Instagram and TikTok ads to a lookalike audience of its best customers.
  • Video: a car maker buys skippable YouTube ads before reviews of competing models.
  • Digital out-of-home: a retailer changes the message on station screens every hour, in step with the weather.

How does digital advertising work?

Behind every digital ad there are three parties: the advertiser who wants attention, the publisher or platform that owns it (Google, Meta, a news site, a streaming service, a screen network) and the technology that matches the two, usually in milliseconds.

Digital advertising online ads: how they work, step by step

  1. 1

    Choose a goal

Awareness, traffic, leads or sales. The goal decides the channel, the format and how you pay.

  2. 2

    Define the audience

Keywords for search; interests, demographics, locations or your own customer lists for social and display.

  3. 3

Set a budget and a bid

Most platforms run an auction: you say what you are willing to pay per click, per thousand impressions or per action, and the platform weighs your bid against ad quality.

  4. 4

    Create the ads

Text, images, video or audio adapted to each format and placement, ideally in several versions to test.

  5. 5

    Launch and track

A tracking tag or pixel records what people do after seeing or clicking the ad, so each campaign can be tied to results.

  6. 6

    Optimise

Budgets move to the audiences, placements and messages that perform; weak ads are paused.

How to buy digital advertising

There are three ways to buy: self-serve platforms such as Google Ads, Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads or Amazon Ads, where you set up and pay for campaigns yourself; programmatic buying, where software buys impressions across thousands of sites and apps; and direct deals with a publisher for a fixed placement or sponsorship. Many companies use an agency for media buying once budgets and channels multiply.

What are digital advertising platforms?

Digital advertising platforms are the tools and marketplaces where ads are bought and served. They fall into a few families:

Families of digital advertising platforms
FamilyExamplesWhat you buy
SearchGoogle Ads, Microsoft AdvertisingPlacements on search results, bought per click
SocialMeta, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest, SnapchatPlacements in feeds, stories and videos, targeted by audience
Retail mediaAmazon Ads and other marketplacesSponsored products near the point of purchase
Video and streamingYouTube, connected TV and streaming servicesVideo ads before or during content
ProgrammaticDemand-side platforms (DSPs)Display, video, audio and DOOH impressions across many publishers

What are the best digital advertising platforms?

There is no single best platform – the right one is where your buyers spend attention while they are ready to act. Search wins when people already look for your product; social and video create demand; LinkedIn reaches B2B decision-makers; retail media works for products sold on marketplaces. Most advertisers start with one or two platforms, prove a return, then expand.

What are the types of digital advertising?

Digital advertising comes in a handful of formats, each suited to a different moment of the buying journey:

Search advertising

Text and shopping ads on search results, triggered by keywords. Captures demand that already exists.

Display advertising

Image and rich-media banners on websites and apps. See display advertising agencies.

Social media advertising

Ads in feeds, stories and short videos on Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn and others, targeted by audience.

Video advertising

Pre-roll, mid-roll and in-feed video, including YouTube and connected TV.

Native advertising

Ads that match the look of the content around them. See native advertising agencies.

Digital out-of-home (DOOH)

Ads on digital screens in streets, stations, malls and venues. See out-of-home advertising agencies.

What is display advertising in digital marketing?

Display advertising is the visual side of digital advertising: banners, rich media and interactive formats shown on websites and apps, usually bought per thousand impressions. It is mostly used to build awareness and to retarget people who already visited your site.

What is digital display advertising?

“Digital display” simply stresses that these ads are served by ad technology rather than printed: the same banner can be targeted, rotated, tested and measured in real time, and bought across many sites at once.

What is programmatic digital advertising?

Programmatic advertising is the automated buying of ad impressions. Instead of negotiating with each publisher, an advertiser sets audiences, budgets and bids in a demand-side platform, and software buys each impression – often through a real-time auction that takes a fraction of a second. Display, video, audio, connected TV and DOOH can all be bought programmatically.

What is PMP in digital advertising?

A private marketplace (PMP) is an invitation-only programmatic auction: a publisher offers its inventory to a selected group of advertisers, often at a floor price, in exchange for better placements and more brand-safe context than the open market.

What is native advertising in digital marketing?

Native ads adopt the format of the platform they appear on – a sponsored article on a news site, a recommended post, a promoted listing – so they feel less intrusive than banners. They must still be labelled as sponsored.

What is digital out of home advertising?

Digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertising displays ads on connected screens in public places: billboards, transport hubs, malls, airports, gyms. Messages can change by time of day, weather or audience, and screens can be bought directly or programmatically.

Who offers the best digital outdoor advertising?

Specialised out-of-home agencies and media buyers that access screen networks directly or through programmatic platforms. In our ranking, blue2purple explicitly buys DOOH alongside programmatic, CTV and social media; you can also compare out-of-home advertising agencies on Sortlist.

What is digital audio advertising?

Digital audio ads run in music streaming, podcasts and digital radio. They reach people when screens are off – while commuting, working out or cooking – and are often bought programmatically, with companion banners on the listening app.

How YouTube influences digital advertising

YouTube made video advertising accessible to any budget: advertisers can pay per view or per thousand impressions, target by interest and intent, and measure the effect on searches and sales. Its formats – skippable and non-skippable in-stream ads, short Bumper ads, Shorts – shaped how brands plan online video advertising across platforms.

Why digital advertising is important

People spend a large part of their day on screens, and most buying journeys – B2B or B2C – now include online research. Digital advertising puts a brand in front of those people at the moment they search, scroll or watch, with a level of measurement traditional media cannot match.

How can digital advertising benefit my business?

  • Reach the right people: target by intent, location, interests or your own customer lists instead of paying for mass audiences.
  • Control spend: start small, set daily caps and stop campaigns that do not work.
  • Measure results: tie spend to leads, sales and cost per acquisition.
  • Test fast: compare messages, offers and audiences in days, then scale what works.
  • Stay visible: retarget people who visited your site, and stay present while competitors are.

How much does digital advertising cost?

There are two costs to plan: media – what you pay the platforms – and management – what an agency or your team costs to run campaigns. In a survey of 600+ US marketers, WebFX found that 64% of businesses spend $301–$5,000 a month on digital advertising, and that most businesses allocate 5–10% of their budget to it.

How much is digital advertising? The pricing models

What agencies charge

On Sortlist, 73 of the 129 ranked digital advertising agencies start at €1,000, 28 accept smaller projects and 24 set their minimum at €3,000 or more. Based on 34 digital advertising projects published on Sortlist, a typical project costs between $9,900 and $11,500.

How much should I spend on digital advertising?

Start from the result you need, not from a round number. Work backwards from your target – leads or sales per month – using the conversion rate of your site and the expected cost per click or per lead on your channels. Then add a test budget large enough for each campaign to collect meaningful data before you judge it, and keep agency or tool fees separate from media spend so you can compare proposals.

How much does digital billboard advertising cost?

Digital billboards are usually sold by slot – a share of the loop on a screen – for a period of days or weeks, or per thousand impressions when bought programmatically. Price depends mostly on location and audience: a screen in a city centre or a major transport hub costs far more than a roadside screen in a smaller town. Ask media owners for audience data per screen before comparing quotes.

Digital advertising metrics to know

Digital advertising metrics
MetricWhat it measuresWhy it matters
ImpressionsHow many times the ad was shownBasis for reach and CPM
CTRClicks divided by impressionsHow relevant the ad is to its audience
Conversion rateShare of clicks that complete the goalQuality of the landing page and offer
CPASpend divided by conversionsWhat one lead or sale costs
ROASRevenue divided by ad spendProfitability of e-commerce campaigns
FrequencyAverage times one person saw the adToo high means wasted budget and fatigue

What is CPM in digital advertising?

CPM, or cost per mille, is the price of 1,000 ad impressions. It is the standard way to buy display, video, audio and DOOH, and a useful way to compare the cost of reaching an audience across channels – even for campaigns bought per click.

What is viewability in digital advertising?

Viewability tells you whether an ad actually had a chance to be seen. Under the Media Rating Council guideline used across the industry, a display ad counts as viewable when at least 50% of its pixels are on screen for one second, and a video ad when 50% is on screen for two consecutive seconds. Buying on viewable impressions avoids paying for ads served below the fold or in background tabs.

How is AI being used in digital advertising?

AI now runs much of the machinery of digital advertising: bidding algorithms decide what to pay for each impression, platforms build audiences from conversion data, and generative tools produce ad variations in minutes. The advertiser’s job shifts from manual settings to good inputs – clean conversion data, clear goals and strong creative.

How to use AI in digital advertising

  • Automated bidding towards conversions or revenue, once enough conversions are tracked.
  • Broad targeting and lookalikes that let the platform find buyers from your best customers.
  • Creative variations – headlines, images, video cuts – generated and tested at scale.
  • Analysis and reporting that flags anomalies and summarises performance.

How is AI changing B2B digital advertising?

In B2B, AI helps where data is thin and cycles are long: identifying target accounts from intent signals, scoring leads, personalising messages by industry or role and connecting ad platforms to the CRM so campaigns optimise for qualified pipeline rather than cheap form fills.

How to automate digital advertising

Automate in layers: first tracking and reporting, then bidding and budget rules, then audience and creative testing. Keep humans on strategy, offers, brand safety and the final review of AI-generated ads – automation amplifies good inputs and bad ones alike.

How are startups automating digital advertising?

Startups typically lean on platform automation from day one – automated campaign types on Google and Meta, AI-generated creative variations and simple rules for budgets – so that a small team can run several channels. The trade-off is less control and a stronger dependence on accurate conversion tracking.

What’s the ROI of automating digital advertising?

The return comes from time saved and from better optimisation – but only once the algorithms have enough reliable conversion data. Measure it like any other change: compare cost per acquisition and revenue before and after, on comparable periods, and keep a manual or holdout campaign as a benchmark.

What are the latest trends in digital advertising?

  • AI-driven campaign types and generative creative on the major platforms.
  • Retail media and connected TV taking a larger share of budgets.
  • Visibility in AI assistants and AI search becoming a goal alongside classic search ads.
  • First-party data and server-side tracking replacing third-party cookies.
  • Programmatic buying of digital out-of-home screens.

How to start digital advertising

What is a digital advertising campaign?

A digital advertising campaign is a set of ads that share one goal, one budget and one time frame – for example, “generate 200 demo requests from logistics managers in Germany in Q1 with LinkedIn and Google Ads”. Each campaign groups ad sets or ad groups by audience, and ads by message and format.

A simple plan for your first campaigns

  1. Set one measurable goal and a target cost per result.
  2. Install tracking (analytics, platform pixels, CRM connection) before spending.
  3. Pick one or two channels where your buyers already are.
  4. Write two or three messages and build a landing page that matches them.
  5. Run for long enough to learn, then cut what does not work and scale what does.

How to add digital to traditional advertising

Use digital to extend what already works offline: retarget people exposed to a TV or radio campaign with online video and social ads, add QR codes or memorable URLs to print and outdoor, mirror billboard creative on digital screens, and track uplift in branded searches during traditional campaigns.

How to learn digital advertising

Start with the free certifications and learning centres of the platforms you plan to use – they explain bidding, targeting and measurement with real interfaces – then run a small budget campaign yourself. Reading agency case studies, like the ones published on Sortlist, shows how strategy, budget and results connect in practice.

What is a digital advertising agency?

A digital advertising agency plans, buys, creates and optimises paid campaigns on digital channels for its clients. Depending on its size and focus, it may handle strategy, media planning and buying, creative production, landing pages, tracking and reporting – or specialise in one platform, format or industry.

Digital advertising vs digital marketing agencies: which one to choose?

Advertising is one component of marketing. A digital advertising agency is built to run paid media and get results from ad spend quickly; a digital marketing agency covers a wider scope – brand, SEO, content, email, social media – usually over a longer horizon. Choose an advertising specialist when paid media is your main growth lever and you already have a brand and a site that convert; choose a broader marketing partner when you need to build those foundations too.

What digital advertising companies do

  • Help you reach your target audience on the right channels
  • Create and manage your digital advertising campaigns
  • Optimise campaigns for mobile devices
  • Track and measure the performance of your campaigns
  • Provide real-time results and regular reporting
  • Keep you updated on the latest online trends
  • Drive conversions, not just clicks

Other digital advertising agencies you will see in other rankings

Several names come up again and again in rankings published elsewhere. Those below have a Sortlist profile but fewer than 10 verified reviews, so we could not score them with the same method; descriptions summarise each agency’s own profile.

  • Disruptive Advertising – A performance advertising agency frequently listed among the top US digital agencies.
  • Intero Digital (Colorado Springs) – A full-funnel digital marketing agency with roots in SEO and SEM.
  • WebFX (Harrisburg) – A digital marketing agency that says it has generated over $3 billion in revenue for its clients.
  • Coalition Technologies – An SEO and digital marketing company with a team of 250+, according to its profile.
  • OuterBox (Akron) – An e-commerce digital marketing agency covering SEO, PPC and web design for 18+ years.

We could not find a Sortlist profile for Thrive Internet Marketing Agency, Power Digital, KlientBoost, Single Grain, VaynerMedia, Ignite Visibility, Tinuiti, Directive, SmartSites or Straight North, which also appear in other rankings. Without verified reviews on Sortlist, we cannot compare them fairly with the agencies above.

How we ranked the agencies

1. The sample

Sortlist lists 3,154 digital advertising agencies worldwide. We evaluated the 198 agencies on the first three pages of Sortlist’s digital advertising listing, in its relevance order. 135 of them have at least 10 verified client reviews – our threshold for a rating to be meaningful. 6 of those also pay for a sponsored placement and were set aside, leaving 129 agencies from 30 countries, with 2,650 verified reviews between them and an average rating of 4.92.

2. The score

Scoring criteria
CriterionWeightHow it is measured
Client rating50%Average of verified reviews, placed on a scale from the lowest (4.38) to the highest (5.0) rating in the ranked group
Review volume30%Number of verified reviews on a logarithmic scale, up to the most reviewed agency (115 reviews)
Published work20%Digital advertising projects published on Sortlist, on the same logarithmic scale, up to the highest count (21 projects)

3. Independence

  • Sortlist is a marketplace, not an agency: it does not appear in its own ranking.
  • Agencies cannot pay to enter the ranking or to move up. Agencies with a sponsored placement are excluded from scoring.
  • The order of the listing page, subscriptions and badges play no part in the score – only the three criteria above.

4. Limits

Reviews reflect each agency’s work across all its services, and agencies with few reviews may be excellent but are not yet scored. That is why every entry says what it is best for – and when another agency would suit you better. The ranking is updated regularly.

How to choose your digital advertising agency

5 questions to ask digital advertising agencies

  1. What is your experience with digital advertising in our industry and markets?
  2. Which channels and formats would you start with, and why?
  3. What digital services do you handle in-house – creative, tracking, landing pages?
  4. What are your rates, and how do you separate fees from media spend?
  5. Which metrics do you use to measure success, and how often do you report?

Red flags

  • Ad accounts opened in the agency’s name instead of yours
  • No clear split between agency fees and media spend
  • Reporting limited to impressions and clicks
  • Guaranteed results before any test
  • Long contracts without a trial period

Frequently asked questions

How to start a digital advertising agency?

Start with a niche – a platform, a format or an industry you know well – and prove results on a few clients before broadening. You need platform expertise and certifications, a clear offer and pricing model (management fee, percentage of spend or performance-based), contracts that keep ad accounts in the client’s name, and case studies to show. Many agencies then list on marketplaces such as Sortlist to be found by companies looking for help.

How to sell digital advertising?

Whether you sell media space or agency services, lead with the client’s business goal rather than with formats: show the audience you can reach, the expected cost per result and how it will be measured. Proposals that separate media spend from fees and include a short test phase are easier to accept.

How to improve hotel digital advertising?

Focus on the moments travellers decide: search ads on your hotel’s name and destination, metasearch and booking-engine campaigns, retargeting of visitors who did not book, and seasonal social campaigns. Track direct bookings, not just clicks, and compare the cost per direct booking with the commissions paid to online travel agencies.

What is digital advertising alliance?

The Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) is a US industry body that runs a self-regulatory programme for interest-based advertising. It is behind the AdChoices icon shown on many ads, which lets people learn why they see an ad and opt out of interest-based targeting.

How do I find the right digital advertising agency on Sortlist?

Compare agencies by rating, number of reviews, published digital advertising projects, budget and languages, then shortlist three to five and ask each the same questions. You can also post your project for free and get matched with qualified agencies.
